(our Blackhouse way)
The Old Fashioned’s been around since the early 1800s, back when a “cocktail” simply meant spirit, sugar, bitters, water — no fuss, no fruit salad on top. By the 1880s, bartenders had started getting creative with extra ingredients, and a few traditionalists in Kentucky got fed up enough to start asking for their drink “the old-fashioned way” — spirit, sugar, bitters, done. The name stuck, and so did the simplicity. It’s traditionally whisky’s drink, but we reckon a good rum deserves the same respect — slow, stirred, no shortcuts. So ours skips the bourbon and pours in Blackhouse instead, because if the original idea was “keep it honest,” that’s a philosophy, not a spirit requirement.
Old Fashioned
Recipe
• 50ml Blackhouse Rum
• 1 sugar cube (or 5ml sugar syrup)
• 2–3 dashes Angostura bitters
• A splash of water
• Orange peel to garnish
Muddle the sugar with the bitters and a splash of water in a glass until dissolved. Add a large ice cube, pour over the rum, and stir slowly until properly chilled. Twist the orange peel over the glass to release the oils, then drop it in.
