Blackhouse Rum
Our story begins with a seriously good rum we call Blackhouse, named in tribute to the traditional stone dwellings that once dotted the rugged landscapes of Moidart. These “blackhouses” were simple, sturdy homes built from local stone, their dark, weathered, peat smoked walls blending seamlessly into the land.
But Moidart’s blackhouses held more than warmth and shelter — they held secrets. The region was once renowned for its hidden stills, tucked away behind thick stone walls and out of sight from the excise-men. It was here, in the flicker of the hearthlight and the quiet of the hills, that the spirit of craftsmanship and quiet rebellion took root.
By adopting the name Blackhouse, we honour that legacy — the resilience, ingenuity, and quiet determination that shaped this land and its people. Blackhouse is more than a name; it’s the essence of Moidart captured in a bottle. The scent of peat smoke and sea salt, the wild sweetness of heather on the wind — all whisper of a land shaped by weather and time. That spirit of place, of quiet craftsmanship and connection to the earth, breathes through every drop of our rum.
Made the Slow Way
Here, we don’t do shortcuts. Our rum is crafted from rich blackstrap molasses and the pure, crystal-clear waters of our local loch — entirely in-house, from fermentation to ageing. Because great rum isn’t made fast; it’s made properly.
When we set out to make rum, we made a promise: to do it all ourselves, from scratch. No imported bases, no blending someone else’s spirit. Just sugar, molasses, oak, time, and a whole lot of care. Every drop of Blackhouse Rum is fermented, distilled, and aged by us — the old-fashioned way, with patience as our secret ingredient
